Meaning of Pentecost
Pentecost Sunday falls on the 50th day after Easter. And this year, it falls on May 19th. The celebration of Pentecost is one of the most ancient celebration of the Church, celebrated early enough to be mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles (20:16) and Paul’s letter to the First Corinthians (16:8).
In Acts 2 recounts the story of the original Pentecost. Jews from all over were gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate the Jewish feast. On that Sunday, ten days after the Ascension of Christ, the apostles were gathered in the Upper Room, where they had seen Christ after His Resurrection:
Jesus had promised to his disciples that he would send the Holy Spirit after he departs from the world. And, on Pentecost, they were granted the gifts of the Spirit. On that day about 3,000 people were converted and baptized. That is why Pentecost is often call “the birthday of the church.”
So who is the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit is God – as revealed in the Third Person of the Trinity. This Holy Spirit was promised to us by Jesus to be our personal guide and friend: “The Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name…will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” (John 14:26)
Come Holy Spirit, come!

John 16:12-13 (The Message)
“I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t them now.
But when the Friend comes, the Spirit of the Truth,
she will take you by the hand and guide you into all the truth there is.”
John 14:25-27
25 “I have said these things to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.”
Pentecost Prayer
Come, Holy Spirit,
fill the hearts of your
faithful. And kindle in
them the fire of your love.
Send forth your spirit and
they shall be created. And
you will renew the face of
the Earth.
