2 Part Sermon Series on “Inner Work” begins this Sunday
July 19: Part 1) “The Shadow Knows!”
July 26: Part 2) “The Magnificent Defeat”

Message                               Inner Work;                        Rev. John Song
Part 1) “The Shadow Knows!”

Do you know the underlying motivations that drive your actions? Are there parts of yourself that you deny or suppress because you’re ashamed or even afraid of them?

The Shadow has power precisely because it remains in the dark; we tend to deny its presence because we consider it unacceptable and disown it. Only when we face and acknowledge the Shadow’s presence and integrate into our whole selves can we turn the shadow into gold.

We will examine what the “Shadow” is and why doing Shadow work is so important — especially at this time in human history. Unconscious people elect unconscious leaders. Conscious people elect conscious leaders.

Romans 7:15-20
Paul’s Shadow

“I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.”

“Know thy self.”
The earliest Greek inscription found in the entrance to the Oracle of Delphi
[Dating back to 1400 BC, it was the most important shrine in all of Greece.)

“The unexamined life is not worth living.”
~ Socrates

“I am human. And nothing that is of human is alien to me.”
~ Terence, 170 B.C. (Roman playwright of North African descent)

“All that is human, I own it.”
~ Juliane of Norwich, the 14th century English woman mystic

“People who don’t confront their demons are destined to be confronted by them.”
~ Michael D’Antonio, Trump biographer

“Things that sailors have no use going out to the sea:
Fear of going down.”
~ Robert Bly

“I must be a mermaid. I have no fear of depths and a great fear of shallow living.”
~ Anaïs Nin

“If we go down into ourselves, we find that we possess exactly what we desire.”
~ Simone Weil

“Our deepest fears are like dragons guarding our deepest treasure.”
~ Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926)
