Advent with Mary: Part 2) “The Magnificat: Mary’s Prophetic Song”

In the Gospel of Luke, the Magnificat are the words that Mary sings when she is with her cousin Elizabeth, and they are celebrating the surprise of new life in their wombs. Both Elizabeth and Mary, not knowing what either of their lives would take, still they said “yes” to God’s invitation.
The Magnificat: Mary’s Prophetic Song flowed out of Mary’s faithful heart and flipped the script of power in society. Like the work of the Holy Spirit, her very being disrupted the status quo, and to this day, her words call us into the renewing spirit of mercy and justice. Mary is telling us that when Christ comes into this world, we are offered a new way of life, a new set of values to live by. We will explore the message of her prophetic song in our time.
Luke 1:46-55
Magnificat (Latin for “My Soul”) or The Song of Mary
And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.
Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
for the Mighty One has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
His mercy is for those who fear him
from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,
and lifted up the lowly;
he has filled the hungry with good things,
|and sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
according to the promise he made to our ancestors,
to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”
